Need help picking ‘em?

If you need help in picking out photos for either the Sumter County Fair or the South Carolina State Fair feel free to shoot me an email with the fair you want to enter listed in the subject line and no more than 10 photos to look at.

I can’t find the registration form for the County Fair yet but that doesn’t mean you can’t have your entries printed and ready to go.

Now what I want you to do is narrow down your choices to 10 and not sending me multiple emails with 10 photos.  I’m not going to do all the work, I know how hard it is to narrow photos down and that is just part of the experience.  Maybe you have 4 photos you wnat to enter but 2 won’t be elligible next year, then I suggest going with the older photos.  But then who knows what you will have for next year’s fair.

We want your books!

We want your books!

Got a ‘page turner’ — share it!

Do you have a photography book that you own and have finished reading? Would you like access to a great collection of subject matter and special interest?

Then look no further than the new SDCC Club Library!

We have a permanent home for our collection and would like to broaden our current selection and need your help! We’d like for you to share (loan) the books that you currently own, thus sharing them with the other club members to enjoy and therefore giving you access to some new reads. Let’s all pitch in and share, it’s fun, you should try it!

Want to know more about our permanent home for this collection? Then email me back and let me fill you in on our latest club project that the library is apart of, we’ve already started the work on this long term project.

FYI: I did a quick inventory of some of my books alone, cost ranging from $19.95, $29.95, $34.95, $46.95 and even upwards of $80 (textbook I taught out of at CCTC) — all at your disposal just for being a member of the Sumter Digital Camera Club.

Another means of improving to better serve you!

Thanks,
Chris

Are you ready for the FAIR?

Got this from Steve Hewett this morning …

For those that missed getting the dates for the state and county fair entries and want more information here is the recap from last night.

South Carolina State Fair

Open Registration Period- July 1, 2010 through September 1, 2010 No registration fee

Late Registration Period- September 2, 2010 through September 10, 2010 $25.00 Registration fee

  • Entries must be framed and ready to hang (wire across the back not sawtooths or anything else)
  • Entries should be behind glass/plexi (recommended since there will be kids present likely with some food in hand)
  • Total width of the frame and photo should not exceed 48 inches by 48 inches.
  • No more than 2 photos may be entered.

Sumter County Fair

Open registration as soon as the form is available online and MUST be returned to the fair office by 12pm September 24, 2010

  • Entries must be dropped off on September 25, 2010 between 10:00am and 2:00pm. anything later will not be accepted.
  • Entries must be framed and ready to hang (wire across the back not sawtooths or anything else)
  • Entries should be behind glass/plexi (recommended since there will be kids present, likely with some food in hand)
  • No more than 2 photos may be entered.

Every year that I (Steve Hewett) have entered the state fair I have had both entries on exhibit during the fair.  So long as the photos are of good quality and not something that the judge sees a lot of (Gervais Street Bridge in Columbia for example) you should be able to have your work displayed.

For the county fair the club has always had pretty good participation and we also sponsor an award so what better way to show our support for the event that to keep up the numbers of entries for the club.  Both shows can be entered for a minimal cost in terms of framing and printing and have the entries do well.  I think the first year I entered the county fair I spent $5 for an 11′x14″ print from adoramapix.com, $5 for a white pre-cut 16″x20″ mat with 11″x14″ opening, and $10 for a black metal frame from Walmart.  The club has also had good luck going to hobby lobby during a frame sale and getting frames for even cheaper.  If you need help picking entires for either show, shoot Chris Moore or myself an email with somme photo possibilities that you would like to enter.

I hope to see you at the fairs!

Blind photography, are you game?

Blind photography, are you game?

Think that you are being outshot by superior equipment and hundreds of dollars in software? Think you can take a great photo no matterwhat kind of camera you have?

Your media is film. There is one ISO, one shutter speed, one Aperture and 27 chances to get it right.

Can you do it?

Just isn’t clicking? How about a basic digital photography class?

Are you, or do you know of someone who might be interested, in a basic digital photography class?

I am in talks with an instructor that is interested in teaching our area.

This will be a 12-hour class, probably broken into 2/3 hour segments. William Jordan IV from Chapin is our guy and his picture was just featured on this month’s cover of Nature Photographer.

Express your interest by emailing me back or giving me a call.

Turn the ‘Light’ on!

Are you currently using Lightroom? Thought about buying it? Wanting to learn more about how it works?

If you answered YES, then you’re not alone.

Therefore I’d like to start the conversation toward holding a workshop on Lightroom. I just installed my full versions of Lightroom 3 along with Photoshop for my new Mac (my trial versions ran out earlier this week). So now I’d like to learn more about Lightroom and see some workflow, tools and functions of this program in action by those that are using it.

News from our friend Richard Bernabe

I got this from our friend Richard Bernabe and thought I’d pass it along …
Have a great weekend,
Chris

All of my winter trips and photography is over and now I have my sights set on spring once again. I thank you all so much for all of the e-mails during the past few weeks, asking about the Belize trip (it was great) and upcoming workshops, classes and tours.

I forgot to mention the article I wrote in Digital Photo Magazine (it was the February Issue) on “Creative Landscapes.” Those who wrote in to say how much they enjoyed it – THANK YOU.

I just wanted to pass along a few reminders before spring is upon us for real.

Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend, June 4 – 6, 2010

Just a quick reminder that tickets for this event go on sale at Midnight, April 1. It will probably be sold out by 9:00 am and that’s no exaggeration – so if you plan on attending, call early and often on April 1. For more information, follow this link:

Waterfall Workshops in the Carolinas

There are two spots still available for Charleston in a couple of weeks:

And a one-day workshop in the Smoky Mountains, hosted by the Nantahala Outdoor Center’s new retail store in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, The Outpost.

A Spring Day in the Smoky Mountains

The weekend Smokies Workshop is sold out, so this is a good alternative.

If none of these events work for you, there are more here:
