Join us for the Iris Festival this weekend!
Posted by admin in Opportunity, Updates on May 19th, 2009
Calling all shutterbugs!
This weekend is Sumter’s annual Iris Festival.
The best day in my opinion is Saturday. There will be a lot going on all day. A parade, art in the park, live performances, the flowers will be in bloom, artwork, sights and sounds of S.C’s oldest and continuous festival.
http://www.sumtersc.gov/VisitingUs/Festivals_Iris.aspx — this schedule is a little hard to read, but you can email me at photoman.sc@gmail.com — I would love to meet up with you and share some pictures, etc.
Mark you calendars and be sure to attend. It is FREE to enter the festival *only exception is Taste at the Gardens on Thursday evening.
Look froward to seeing all that can make it!
Chris
Little wet, but a lot of fun!

On Sunday we were the few, but proud — or maybe just a little loony!
Why? Because we decided to push forward with the scheduled walkabout despite the fact that it was raining here in Sumter. Surely it wasn’t raining in Columbia too! As we left Sumter and entered the swamp on U.S. 378 the skies opened up. I was thinking to myself, we are crazy for doing this, but as we approached 601 it wasn’t raining at all. Long story short, we got parked on Main Street and made our way over to the statehouse. We got in a few minutes worth of shooting before we had to pull out our umbrellas. Then we spent some time taking pictures of the grounds and city from beneath the portico of the statehouse. SDCC walkabout chairman Bobby Nance even posed as a statue for us, you’ll have to come to the meeting to see those pictures. Then we shot some in the rain, umbrella in hand, on the grounds. A nice act of juggling if I can say so myself. After leaving the statehouse we proceeded to River Walk Park in West Columbia and snapped a few pictures of the Gervais Street Bridge, etc.
And what trip would not be complete without a stop to eat, we enjoyed pizza from the Mellow Mushroom in downtown and then made our way home. A great time of fellowship and picture taking despite being soggy, but heck you coulnd’t have asked for better light! =)

Make to join us at the June meeting for a slideshow of images from the walkabout.

‘Capital City’ walkabout on Sunday
Posted by admin in Walk-a-bouts on May 13th, 2009
The Sumter Digital Camera Club plans to hold its monthly walkabout in Columbia on Sunday afternoon, May 17.
We’ll leave from Sumter no later than 4:15 PM on Sunday from the parking lot of the Sumter Mall near the community room (approximately midway between Belks and the main mall entrance on the Broad Street side of the mall).
We will park on Main Street near the State House to give an opportunity for photographing on the grounds of the State House and around Trinity Episcopal Church. From downtown we will travel by car across the Gervais St. bridge to the River Walk Park (no admission charge) in West Columbia, just over the Congaree River from Columbia. Opportunities to shoot there should include man-made structures such as the Gervais Street bridge as well as a variety of more natural vistas. We will probably stop somewhere on the way home for supper.
All forum participants are encouraged to participate.
Anyone preferring to drive independently with intentions of meeting the rest of the group in Columiba, please email us.
Don’t forget!

Just bumping this as a friendly reminder …
If you are a member of the SDCC please bring some additional prints that you would like to have placed on the “Wall @ the Mall” – we are going to try and update that very soon. What do you need to bring for that? 8×10 prints, borderless, with no signatures/logos on them, if you have any questions please feel free to email me back
I look forward to seeing everyone who can make it – we have a great meeting planned!
Site issues
As with anything in life, website are no exception and they have problems too. Seems that something happened earlier today were the main page wasn’t loading except for the header. I removed the some stuff and added it back. It seems to be working — for now.
If you have any problems or issue with any portion of the site don’t hesitate to email me at info@sumtershutterbugs.com.
May meeting details

Join us next Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 7pm in the Community Meeting Room at Sumter Mall.
Our topic of discussion this month is Web 2.0
What is Web 2.0 and why should you care? Why incorporate this into our monthly meeting?
Because by having a better understanding of how the web and photography have merged — knowledge of current websites and platforms — we can share, learn and grow.
“Web 2.0″ refers to a perceived second generation of web development and design, that facilitates communication, secure information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration on the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities, hosted services, and applications; such as social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0)
During our meeting I’ll be discussing how you can share your work, ways to promote your photography, ways to grow and learn, introduction to our (a) forum (b) new and improved website and (c) yahoo group along with how you can even have your own website.
Regardless of where you are in your photography, your computer skills and available free time during the month I’ll try touch on just the basics and incorporate options, automated and semi-automated, but nothing to advanced.
This will be an action packed meeting!
Our assignment of the month is: Cityscapes
We invite you to join us for another exciting meeting. Make sure to bring your prints for the (a) Photo of the Month and (b) Assignment of the Month.
Also bring a guest and expose them to the world of photography!
Happy Shooting!
Chris
New and improved just for you! =)
Welcome to the all new and improved SumterShutterbugs.com. ~ As always we’ve updated to better serve you.
I’m really happy with this new software called Wordpress. I was able to pull all of our updates from the New & Updates section since the beginning of 2007 — they are now achieved and searchable, isn’t technology is amazing?
I’ll be tweaking this over the next couple of days. Another added bounus is that for those of you that use RSS readers, you can now subscribe to our content and have it delivered directly to you.
