We had a great meeting and walkabout this month. I just finished uploading the photos from the Jan & Feb meetings. Sorry for the delay -- life is hectic as always and I just can't ever find the time to get everything done. If you haven't been to a meeting in a while, you don't know what you are missing. We have started monthly "small groups" during the meetings. We spilt into small groups of about 8-10 people to discuss various topics and spend time getting to know one another, sharing ideas and answering questions. Also our membership drive is going well. Thanks to the efforts of our previous membership chair Pete Lawrence. Yes Pete there is light at the end of the tunnel. After a year in limbo we have officially switched over to where dues are due each January and our members have responded with enthusiasm. I don't want to bore you with idle chatter, back to work. Take care and keep in touch my friends. HAPPY SHOOTING!

01/02/09

I’ll be sending out some more information the beginning of the week about the meeting and the coming year. I just wanted to send out a quick email so that you could mark it on the calendar if you haven’t already.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend and I look forward to seeing you guys on Thursday!

We had a great meeting this evening. Phillip Jones, from the South Carolina Wildlife magazine gave a phenomenal presentation about his work and career. We thank him for coming over and spending the evening with us. Several firsts this evening. We tried something new with the contests, we scanned all the entries prior to putting them up, which in turn allowed us to share the winners and all entries here on the site. (Photos of the Month / Assignment of the Month). Another first was the dad, Mike, went overboard and brought chicken wings, they were delicious! We had a total of 42 people in attendance.

Don't forget about our Fall Color photoshoot/walkabout on Oct. 18 in the upstate of South Carolina. Phillip Jones shared some insight of where to go and even where we could find some cheap gas, important thing these days.

Talk to you soon. Happy shooting! :)

09/19/08

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that I just got the final that Phillip Jones from the South Carolina Wildlife magazine will be speaking at our Oct. 9, 2008 meeting. If you have never seen the magazine you don't know what you are missing. I have personally envied their work since I got into photography.

So mark you calendars and make sure to bring a friend because this is going to be a great meeting!

Adding to better serve you! ~ Yesterday we revisited and reactivated our Yahoo group! and would like for you to join us. Why a Yahoo group! now? Well I was looking for ways to reach more of our members. Not everyone is on the forum or has time to check it, so it was suggested long ago that we have a discussion group like this, we already had it in place and decided to revisit it.

Want to join us, then email me at info@sumtershutterbugs.com and I'll get you added right away.

One thing that might help some of you is to change your status to receive a daily digest, so you get all the messages from the day condensed into one email versus getting several emails throughout the day. Just a thought, if you need help or want me to change your setting for you, just let me know.

As always keep all constructive criticism coming my way. Nothing is too small and are always looking for ways to better server YOU our members.

I look forward to your participation in the coming months and years.

We also discussed our upcoming fall color trip and tried to hammer out the details for the second annual trip. I'll be sharing more information very soon. If you are interested please email me at info@sumtershutterbugs.com -- subject: fall color trip

Also don't forget about getting your entries in for this year's Sumter County Fair, links to the entry form, tags and other information can be found here. DEADLINE for entries is: Noon on September 25th, 2008

07/06/08

We're still alive and kicking folks! I promise. I apologize for not updating the site like I should have, but I've been slightly sidetracked with a promotion at my full time job along with photography assignments for my company, Palmetto Photography (this is our busiest time of the year, wedding season). Not to mention that our board has been stretched thin due to other projects in their lives as well, from having a baby to knee replacement surgery. So hang in there ... we are still meeting and having a good time.

You might want to check out our forum as well, forum. You can learn a lot from the very talented photographers that are sharing there, people of all levels coming together to help each other.

We'll thanks again for your patience and understanding and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

We had a great turnout at our montly workshop lead by Bobby Nance and assisted by Steve Hewett and Jason Hart. Below is a group photo of the attendees. Thanks to all that came out and helped to make this another successful SDCC outing! :)

03/21/08

Join us for our monthly workshop lead by Bobby Nance on Tuesday, March 25 at 6 pm at Swan Lake-Iris Gardens. Meet at the map located just inside of the main entrance/gate to the park on the main side.

Information from Bobby ~ Spring photography @ Swan Lake … Opportunities will be limited compared to what will be there later in the season, but there are already tulips, pansies, yellow jessamine, camellias, some azaleas and some flowering trees. We’ll keep moving while we still have light in order to make the most of the time. I would also suggest that folks bring homemade reflectors and/or wind barriers if it's windy that afternoon.

There will be assistance available for camera settings and macro lens attachments will be available for trying out by any who are interested. Extra tripods will be available also.

Bobby will be assisted by Steve Hewett, who will offer technical help for the Nikon shooters, as well by Jason Hart, who will offer assistance to the Canon shooters.

03/16/08

A great crowd turned out for our monthly walk-a-bout held on the grounds of the Sumter County Museum and Carolina Backcountry in downtown Sumter. Below is a group photo, what a handsome group of photogs, eh!?! :)

03/14/08

The March meeting was a smash, we had a near record crowd of 39 people in attendance. Bobby and Chris shared great tips about spring shooting. However Bobby set himself up for another presentation on "springs" (bouncy kind) ... ha! :) All and all a great meeting and fellowship of photographers. Congratulations to all the winner in the Photo of the Month and Assignment categories.

03/12/08

The Sumter Digital Camera Club’s very own Bobby Nance and Chris Moore are teaming up to bring you tips and tricks for springtime shooting at this month's meeting on March 13. Bobby will be sharing ideas on colors, landscapes and macro photography. And Chris will talk on photographing spring sports/action. Don’t miss this informative session … you’ll be ready to “hop” out there and capture the beauty and joys of spring!

03/03/08

March is going to be a celebration for us at the Sumter Digital Camera Club! We are turning 3! ... Three is the magic number you know! It is hard to believe how we have come since our first meeting in March 2005. Time has flown to say the least. Stay tuned for the latest updates about happenings this coming month.

01/18/08

As you might have noticed I have made updates to the site today. I have added more buttons at the top in the navigation bar and added several new pages. Please peruse through the site, if you find a broken link, please let me know by emailing me at info@sumtershutterbugs.com with the subject "website error" ... I have tried to surf through the pages looking for errors/broken links, I think that I have found the majority of them. I hope you enjoy the new additions and find it easier to find what you are looking for. As always if you have any suggestions don't hesitate to send them my way.

01/17/08

Our 1st workshop of the New Year will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 7pm in the community meeting room at Sumter Mall (where we hold our monthly meetings).

This month's topic is "How to Use Your Camera" and will be perfect for all of you who received new digital cameras for Christmas! Fellow SDCC member, Pete Lawrence, will be giving a walkthrough of basic camera settings (such as Program, Shutter, Aperture Priority, and Manual Modes, etc.). He will explain their function and purpose and let you know which setting will work best in certain situations.

Details provided by Pete: This will be hands on workshop so you will need to bring your camera and book. I will be talking about things that effect light; ISO, shutter speed and aperture. Then I will talk about the situations that suggest one mode over another on your camera. Which in turn will lead to discussing manual mode and then finishing with things that further effect exposure such as white balance.

The workshop is FREE for members of the Sumter Digital Camera Club. There is a cost of $10 for non-members or guests. It is only $25/year to join, so if you are interested in joining please let me know. Just one of the benefits of being a member.

Please send me an email (info@sumtershutterbugs.com) no later than Tuesday morning so that we know many to expect, have refreshments for and seating for.

01/17/08

The monthly assignment/topic list for 2008 has been updated. It was suggested at the January meeting that we change/update the following: 1) March will become "landscape architecture" 2) October is "Faces" 3) November is "Trees" ... good luck to each of you this coming year as you shoot images for these contests.

01/14/08

What a way to start the New Year! We had a total of 28 attendees at our January monthly meeting. Laura Cardello from USC Sumter spoke about choosing pictures for a show and critiqued images brought in by several SDCC members. She also discussed the upcoming show that will be held at USC Sumter featuring the work of members of the SDCC in the Spring of this year. Several new members were selected for our board as replacements were needed following several vacancies in the end of 2007. Our first walk-a-bout of 2008 was held on the campus of USC Sumter. There were a total of five members present (I was unable to attend due to a death in our family). Don't forget about our January workshop to be held on Jan. 22 at 7pm, meeting place: TBA this week. Check back often for updates on club happenings and if you have a question at any time email us at info@sumtershutterbugs.com.

Our inaugural monthly workshop was a HUGE success! We had a total of 14 people in attendance. One of the comments we received." I think the workshop idea is fantastic and definitely worthwhile." Thanks to Jennifer VanAllen for all of her hard work prior, during and after the workshop. She also spent a lot of time with everyone during the event sharing about lighting, posing and key points to remember. Stay tuned for a gallery of photos from the event. Above is a group shot from the event, minus Debbie and Chris, who had to leave early.

9/23/07

The results of our Fall 2007 Survey were released at the September meeting along with the latest issue of our newsletter, The Focal Point. Click here for the results and Sept. TFP (newsletter). We had a whopping 38 in attendance at the meeting. Kent Weir of Carodel Photographers of Sumter spoke about portraiture at the meeting. 8/13/07

Yesterday, Sunday, August 12, 2007, we launched our Fall 2007 Survey. This is an effort to obtain feedback from you our members. This will help us improve the club and make sure everyone is getting the most out of their time and efforts. We encourage you to give us your feedback. The survey is completely ANONYMOUS, therefore answer these questions honestly and include your thoughts/constructive criticisms in the appropriate areas.

8/9/07

We had a total of 18 people in attendance for the August meeting. We discussed topics that members would like to see in the coming months. Speakers within are group are running thin, therefore I am going to start looking outward and try to invite other photographers from the surrounding area(s) to share their expertise and passion. You might have also noticed that you did not receive any information about the August meeting. I was pushed for time and was not able to get postcards out before leaving for a business trip out of town the week prior. I then decided to use the meeting as a test, what would happen if we didn't promote the meeting at all. I wanted to see exactly how many people would remember to come without a reminder and to prove our methods of communication - combined - work well (i.e. the forum, the email distribution list, postcards, our myspace.com site, etc.) I appreciate your continued support and look forward to seeing you soon.

7/07/07

Just a friendly reminder for those interested that there will be a Palmetto Shutterbugs walk-a-bout held in downtown Sumter this Saturday evening (1/27) starting at 6:30pm. This will be a chance to photograph the night scene of our beautiful downtown. Bring your tripod, if you don’t have one, we should have some an extra one or two and we all can share.

Immediately following the walk-a-bout we will go to dinner at Katherine’s Restaurant on Main Street. Please RSVP to this email if you plan on attending the walk-a-bout and/or dinner so we will know how many to make reservations for.

Also if you are interested … Palmetto Shutterbugs has planned its first President’s Board meeting (*see below) for the same day (1/27) in Sumter, SC. Following our meeting, at 6 pm, we are inviting anyone within our group(s) with any suggestions, thoughts, or comments on where you would like to see our group(s) move or grow a chance to voice your concerns/opinions to the board. We have allotted a 30 minute window for you to do so. The only thing that we ask is that you please RSVP ahead of time so we will know how many to expect and how much time to give each person. Just reply back to this email and I will send you details of how to get to the conference room.

* NOTE: For those of you wonder who makes up the board, it is comprised of each of the chapter presidents or a representative sent on behalf of the president in their absence.

We hope that you all will join us for that afternoon/evening.
